Every group or company is formed with a purpose and that is to succeed at whatever the task is. The business could be an office supply business and the goal would be to be the biggest and most respected office supply company in the world. If the group is a sports team then the goal is to excel in all areas and become the best in the league.

The similarity between businesses, sports teams and all other groups is great and the techniques to achieving their goals are the same.

How it got started and for that matter why it got started is a fascinating thing. I want the opportunity to spend a long time with you over the years discussing this very issue. Team building tips

Make sure that team knows what is expected of them. If the members have no idea of you views of what they need to do they have no frame of reference.

The team members need to know how they fit into the picture. Show them how the team is constructed and clearly identify where they fall into the structure.

Are the team members empowered to make decisions? Be sure that every member of the team is given enough room so that they feel that they are an important and integral part of the group.

Give the team members as much creative license as you can. It is understood that some things need to be done a specific way but find the room for member creativity and you will see a more satisfied team.

How team building started

Becoming a cohesive unit is of the utmost importance with regard to any team and the way to acquire this type of unit is through team building. Team building activities have been at the core of all successful groups for centuries; though the tasks used to achieve it are different the principles stay the same.

The last few companies that I worked for all had very strong human resources departments and all kept very good track of their corporate team building programs and tracked the successful endeavors and the failed ones. In my opinion the most important part of team building is that you track what types of tasks will strengthen the team and which tasks do nothing for the building aspect of the team.

If you work for or belong to a group that needs to mesh better as around if any of the members have a team building idea that would work for everyone involved. You may find that the best ideas come from within the team and not some book. The people that are part of the team have much greater insight into the roles and the relationships needing to be built and strengthened so give them a shot.

I was lucky enough in my company to be able to take part in the building of additional team building concepts and was sent to the largest team building seminar in the country to identify the shortcomings of the corporate team building program we were under and improve what could be improved upon. I must admit that it was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life, not just my corporate life. I was able to see how the same ideas could work for my local softball team and for that matter even my family.

Why it works

The key is to work together as a cohesive unit regardless of the goal you are trying to achieve. The less that the team members have to worry about the others pulling their own weight the better they will be able to focus on the part of the whole they are responsible for.
